> Older Pennsylvania house? Tick what you can see (fuse box, two-prong outlets, cloth wiring, panel brand) and get a sourced list of what's worth an electrician's look.

Interactive tool: the visitor picks when the house was built and ticks visible features (fuse box, 60/100-amp service, Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, knob-and-tube or cloth wiring, two-prong outlets, no GFCI near water, silver-colored wiring, frequent trips, lights dimming, extension cords as wiring, planned major loads, warm/buzzing/hot-smelling devices). It lists which items are worth an electrician's assessment and why. It does not diagnose, rate safety, or quote prices, and nothing is sent anywhere.

## Criteria and sources

- Aluminum branch wiring (some homes wired 1965 to the mid-1970s): 55 times more likely to have a connection reach fire-hazard conditions; permanent repairs are rewiring or special copper pigtail connectors (CPSC Pub. 516: https://www.cpsc.gov/s3fs-public/516.pdf).
- Fuse box replacement $1,500 to $2,000 (up to $4,500 with wiring); Federal Pacific or Zinsco replacement $1,500 to $4,000 (HomeAdvisor, June 2026).
- Warning signs: warm or discolored outlets, flicker, frequent trips or blown fuses, shocks (ESFI).
- Housing age: homes built before 1940 are 57% of Reading, 54% of Lancaster, 49% of York (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024).
- Heat, buzzing, discoloration, or a hot smell is urgent; smoke, sparking, or a burning smell means leave and call 911.
